Tortoise & Reptile Terrariums

Tortoises like turtles start out small and then grow. Turtles may not graduate to two feet in diameter of the carapace, but they will grow. If you are purchasing a baby tortoise you will require some type of housing for them. Tortoise terrariums are just one option on the market that you can buy.

Tortoise terrariums will house any reptile with the necessary space, substrate and accessories required. When you buy the terrarium you are just purchasing the housing. You will need to make a decision regarding the lights, heat source, and much more depending on the size and type of your tortoise. Most tortoises are from the desert of Africa. They will require dry heat and plenty of sun for basking. Some tortoises can even feel like burrowing or getting wet. Of course, as your tortoise ages you will have to increase the size of tortoise terrarium you purchase.

Most places have a small and medium sized terrarium on sale for tortoises. These tortoise terrariums are 60x36cm and 80x45cm respectively. This is fairly small, which is why the enclosures work best for turtles, small reptiles, and baby tortoises. Once your baby tortoise begins to grow, you will need to enlarge their tank space by looking for a larger terrarium, vivarium, or tortoise garden.

The Tortoise or Turtle terrariums in the sizes we mentioned are fashioned in a B shape with a front screen that is lower than the sides and back wall. It is an attractive look, but also easy for your turtle to get around. It will fit nicely in your home decor. There is no roof on the terrarium giving your pet excellent ventilation. You can add a mesh roof if you have an intelligent escapee. This rarely happens with tortoises or turtles, but still you might feel it is necessary to have a mesh roof.

Access through the top makes the tortoise terrariums easy to clean. It is also easy to feed your pet tortoise. Once your pet ages you may be looking for an enclosure that is more than two feet in depth and at least four feet in width. Leopard tortoises can grow to two feet and 100 pounds. Turtles will not be this large. You may find a 36 inch tank with 18 inches in depth is required for your pet turtle.

You will have plenty of choices whether you go with the tortoise terrariums or something a little larger. Once you find the right sized terrarium for your pet you can begin to look for the accessories, decor, and dishes. Also remember that you will need lighting and some type of heat source to ensure your turtle or tortoise will never be too hot or cold. Like other reptiles tortoises will need certain types of light in order to grow and develop a good shell. Improper diet and sun can lead to malformations, illness and early death. Even tortoise vivariums and terrariums that are not the right size could affect the health of your pet.
